Best Practices for a healthy IT Environment

How Database is important for my business?

The database is very sensitive and very important as all information related to our software are saved there, SQL databases are subject to occasional corruption issues, but these can be minimized with careful management.

 

What are the causes of corruption?

There are many ways a database can be corrupted. Some are user-related like below:

  • Rebooting or switching off PC when server or clients are open

  • PC crashing (freezing) when server and clients are open

 

 Sometimes hardware and/or unhealthy IT environment are the causes such as:

  • Harddisk error

  • Network error or failure

  • Power loss

  • Virus issues

  • OS related issues. etc.

 

How can I prevent this?

  • Have a proper power back up with UPS

  • Shutdown all systems safely

  1. Close applications in Clients first [If exist] and shutdown the clients
  2. Close it in Server @ last
  3. Shutdown the server system
  • Have anti virus software in all systems and enable firewall in all machines
  • Take database backup in external media (i.e.. CD/RW, Flash drive, Cloud (Google Drive / Dropbox))
  • Verify the Network connections regularly, Data loss must be 0 in network ping
  • Use CHKDSK [Check disk] tool monthly once
      1. My computer – Select the drive and right click – Properties – Goto Tools tab – Click Check now button
  • Always exit the database or application correctly and avoid using Alt+Ctrl+Delete / Task manager to terminate the application or database
  • Do periodic health check [maintenance] for your computer with the help of your hardware specialists
  • Troubleshoot if  improperly disconnected from network
