How to configure a Barcode Printer?

Barcode Printer
Barcode Printer is a peripheral device used for printing barcode labels or tags which can be attached or printed directly on physical objects.
Barcode printers are generally used to labels retail items with unique ID(s).

The Barcode Printer that are commonly used are:
Both types of barcode printer are supported by RPOS 6. The usability and limitations of both types are mentioned below

Thermal Printer
Direct Thermal Printer - Most widely used technology for barcoding.
  • Benefits of Direct Thermal
    • Sharp print quality with good scannability
    • Good for application with short shelf life, for example - Shipping Label and Receipts
    • Simple to operate and less expensive to maintain, as it does not have ink, toner or ribbon to monitor or replace
    • Batch or single label printing is available with less waste
    • More durable then dot matrix and laser printer
  • Limitation of Direct Thermal
    • Sensitive to environmental condition such as heat and light
    • Paper remains chemically coated after printing something requiring a coating adhere to the paper to protect from UV light exposure, chemical and abrasions.
Thermal Printer - Uses the same technology as of Direct Thermal printer, but replace chemically coated paper with a non-sensitized face stock and a inked ribbon.
  • Benefits of Thermal Transfer
    • Crisp, high-definition text, graphics and barcode for maximum readability
    • Produce long life scannability
    • Produce batch or single print labels with less wastage of raw material
    • Maintenance cost is less as compare to dot matrix, inkjet and laser
    • High durability
  • Limitation of Thermal Printer
    • Supply costs comparatively higher than Direct Thermal
    • Ribbon can be wasteful if minute need to be printed from it
Laser Printer
Laser printer works similar to a photo copier.
  • Benefits of Laser Printer
    • High quality text and graphics are printed on paper documents
    • Density and resolution are relatively high
    • Scannable barcode is produced for any wavelength when it is read with an infrared scanner
  • Limitation of Laser Printer
    • Not well suited for industrial environment
    • Wasteful in small operation
    • Label adhesives should be strong to resist the heat and pressure of the fuser
    • Less Durability - water resistant non chemical resistant labels are not formed.
    • High Expensive - Cost of toner is higher as it requires five time more toner than normal text.
